Day 29 Abbots Bromley to Uttoxeter ( a day of stiles and wet grass)

And she's back! Thank you Garry for the rest from typing yesterday.

As we packed up and left the Airbnb in Hednesford, we weren't particularly enthusiastic about the day's walking ahead.

However, once we arrived at Abbot's Bromley, the clouds had cleared a little and Garry walked a short way through Abbot's Bromley main street before turning onto the Staffordshire Way, which he would remain on for the duration of the planned walk today.

Today was a shorter walk of 7.6 miles from Abbot's Bromley to Uttoxeter. There were a lot of stiles for Garry to negotiate and a lot of long wet grass. It was uneven underfoot so not the easiest walking day today. As he walked through New Thorntree farm, he received scowls from a couple of cows.

About half way along today's walk, in Scounslow Green, the buttercups were out despite the grey skies, the sheep didn't seem to mind either.

Whilst Garry was walking Alfie and I took refuge in a coffee shop for a short while, then we walked in the opposite direction on the Staffordshire Way and met Garry towards Knightsfield Farm.

After the day's walk was over, we enjoyed a coffee (and biscoff cheesecake for Garry!), a quick trip to Pets at Home for treats for Alfie and then headed to our new Airbnb in Ashbourne. Lovely treats were waiting for us!

Tomorrow's walk will take us into Derbsyshire, so feeling a long way from Cornwall now!

Looking at the routes for the next couple of days, there may be some changes to the planned routes. Whilst Dovedale looks like a lovely walk, the Tissington trail is calling as an easier track. Watch this space....

  1. Dovedale is beautiful, but I can also see the attraction of the Tissington Trail as a much easier walking prospect - another disused railway line. I have walked sections of both when I stayed at the H.F. Guest House at Thorpe, just north of Ashbourne.
Cricket rained off this evening - waterlogged pitch!

  2. We cycled the Tissington trail, Ashbourne to Hartington, back in March - hired electric cycles in view of Anna's ongoing recovery (and my laziness). Be aware that it's uphill from Ashbourne, albeit not seriously so.

A month after our return, we look back at the perceived simplicity of life during the walk. Walking, eating, sleeping and enjoying our ever-changing surroundings.  Would we recommend it? You bet we would!

Day 86 Nybster to John o'Groats (The final day!)

Lands End to John o'Groats complete! Winding back to yesterday evening, Garry and I had a stroll around Wick harbour.        Much later in the evening, a surprise visitor, Will, arrived in Wick after 15 hours of train travel from London. I've never seen Garry so surprised! A later night than originally planned before the final walking day! This morning, I dropped Garry and Will at Nybster where they began walking northwards along the A99. Me and Alfie headed to park up at John o'Groats.       We met in John O'Groats village and walked together to Duncansby Head, which is the true north easterly point of mainland UK, with some incredible sea stacks. It was pretty windy there!        From Duncansby Head, we walked back towards John O'Groats vil...

One week to go...

We have one week to go before we start walking so we have started thinking about packing the essentials. Compead plasters and comfy worn in walking shoes has been the major advice. This week there have been doubts creeping in. 'Can we really do this?' However,  Garry spoke with his postie friends at cricket this week who have reassured him that a day's walking is all in a day's work for them, carrying a bag up to 10kg over their shoulder. So we're perfectly reassured now! We've had some walks these last few weeks with and without friends.            Also we've practised eating  some extra carbs (although I'm not sure cakes are the best sort of carb to be eating!   We welcome any more tips....
