Day 43 Hawes to Keld ( a day of 'halfs')

Today marked the day that we completed half the planned days of walking (43/86).  A total of 565 miles walked which is around half of what we expect the final total to be. Also, today's destination was at the Keld Lodge, which is situated half way on the Coast to coast walk and we reckon about half way up the UK.         The three of us walked through a bustling Hawes, with a trail of sports cars and motorbikes driving through the village. We walked along a pleasant valley to a tea shop / campsite, in Hardraw where we stopped for a coffee (and Alfie a fresh stream drink). Garry continued along the Pennine Way heading towards Great Shunner Fell. After I left Garry, I walked down a pathway by an old railway bridge in Hawes. I found a large building with a bike repair shop and cafe, with very friendly young staff. As it looked like rain was on its way, I got a take away coffee and headed back to the refuge of the car.  Once it had brightened up a little...

Day 42 Gearstones to Hawes

Once Garry was dropped at Gearstones, it was a long haul up the Dales Way for a mile and a half. As Garry went over the top of the track it opened out to the views of two pretty dales, with great views for miles.    As Garry looked back he saw the viaduct that we saw on the way to the drop off point and a number of military helicopters flying over.    The Pennine Way contoured its way around the hillside and then dropped consistently into the valley where Gayle and Hawes are nestled. Garry's lunch spot today was the best one he'd have, sitting on a grassy bank leaning against a large rock, looking at an old Roman Road heading east.   Unfortunately, he only has the picture in his head, not on camera!! Whilst Garry was walking, Alfie and I drove to Hawes, parked up and wandered round the village. It's a pretty village with a number of interesting shops and a small waterfall in the centre of the village.  Once the wander was complete, we walked out...

Day 41 Horton in Ribbesdale to Gearstones

Garry started by walking up the road from Horton in Ribbesdale and took a quiet lane all the way to High Birkwith, an undulating lane for 2.5 miles.  He then took a bridleway across the moors to the Dales Way.  Whilst walking where the Pennine bridleway crosses the Three Peaks Way, Garry met three men (Andy, James and Dave) who were walking the Yorkshire Three Peaks who he recognised from Cheltenham. They stopped for a chat. What a remarkable coincidence! After this, Garry then turned down towards the road where I met him at Gearstones. We soon found a cafe nearby for refreshments! Whilst Garry was walking today, me and Alfie had an adventurous trip to Halfords in Burnley to source a part for our electric coolbox. We had success so we have cold food on our travels again! 6.6 miles walked today for Garry. Rest Day tomorrow (hooray!) Cancer Research UK Fundraising page

Day 40 Malham to Horton in Ribblesdale

The day started with a walk for the three of us from Malham up to Malham Cove (not quite so sunny as my visit yesterday).  Me and Alfie said goodbye to Garry as he continued his ascent up from the Cove up to the top near Malham Tarn. Whilst Garry was climbing, me and Alfie walked through a woodland walk and then visited the tea rooms in Malham for a morning coffee and nibbles.    At the top of the cove was a  limestone pavement which was very tricky to traverse, especially for a whippet. The drive up from Malham was initially up a  steep single track road with amazing views of Yorkshire countryside, followed by a few spaced out farms.  Meanwhile, Garry looked back from where he was walking and saw Malham Tarn behind him.        Garry walked some of the way along the same lane and I waited opposite a farm for a while to meet the traveller coming up behind me He soon headed off again towards Horton in Ribblesdale, along the Ribble W...
