Day 85 (Penultimate Day!) Reiss to Nybster (1,100 miles completed!)

 

                                                

Another windy day! We parked the car in Reiss, near Wick Golf course and set off  with the plan of walking along Reiss beach / Sinclair's Bay together. Initially we walked a small section on the A99 to reach the farm track towards the beach. As we started walking down the farm track, two dogs appeared, one more 'protective' looking than the other, so me and Alfie retreated back to the car and Garry continued on his merry way. 

                                           

As me and Alfie were walking back to the car, we hastened our pace so we could dive into a gateway as the largest load I've ever seen on the road was coming towards us.




It was some subsea7 equipment being transported at about 3mph, part of a offshore energy transition system. I joined a queue behind it heading to Nybster a little later on. 

 
Meanwhile, Garry began walking along the beach that we had visited yesterday (no sun today). He walked passed the golf course and walked along the beach with the tide slowly coming in. After a mile and a half, he had to turn inland once again to cross a river, the river of Wester, by going back across the golf course to reach the A99 where there was a bridge. 

                                            

He continued along the A99 for some long straight stretches, through Keiss, where he met me and Alfie, after our short harbour stroll.

    


Garry then continued onto Nybster, seeing a view of Keiss castle along the way, and met me and Alfie at Nybster Broch centre, from here we headed back towards Wick.


We're set up for tomorrow's final arrival at John o'Groats. We'll probably also visit Duncansby Head as well.

Garry walked 8.4 miles today. Just 10 miles or so to go!

    Well done Garry, Marie and Alfie. An amazing achievement and something to be so proud of having seen through. What brilliant teamwork and perseverance to have got there on schedule as planned. Great respect to you all.

The day after...

     We started from Land’s End on May 3 rd 2025, full of enthusiasm and apprehension and finished at John o'Groats on August 9 th 2025, weathered, weary but full of pride. Garry has walked   1112 miles through trails, bogs, lanes, fields and roads. I’ve walked   nearly 38% of the miles, a total of 421 miles, largely walking small sections each day whilst being the support vehicle for collecting and dropping Garry at the start and end of the routes.   We have walked through 25 different counties and districts/burghs (a different system in Scotland). We have stayed in 28 different places, mostly Airbnbs, but also a hotel, a ‘micro-lodge’, at a family member’s house and home. 40 nights have been in Scotland and   60 nights have been in England. Day 86 Nybster to John o'Groats (The final day!)

                                                      Lands End to John o'Groats complete! Winding back to yesterday evening, Garry and I had a stroll around Wick harbour.        Much later in the evening, a surprise visitor, Will, arrived in Wick after 15 hours of train travel from London. I've never seen Garry so surprised! A later night than originally planned before the final walking day! This morning, I dropped Garry and Will at Nybster where they began walking northwards along the A99.
