This morning we left our hotel in Fort William after having our last cooked breakfast there and headed to Gairlochy Bottom Loch where all three of us crossed the Caledonian Canal and walked in a north easterly direction up a quiet country lane.
Garry turned off the Lane at Clunes and then followed the Great Glen Way through Clunes Forest and Laggan forest. This was a well maintained path with great views across Loch Lochy to the mountains beyond.Loch Lochy is the third deepest loch in the UK and was a training ground for the original army and Royal Marine Commandos. Garry passed a dummy landing craft by the side of the Loch. There was a diversion off the Great Glen Way due to the Coire Glas pumped hydro electric scheme. This added an additional half an hour onto Garry's journey.Meanwhile, I had driven to Laggan Lock and Alfie and I walked out to meet Garry. After a while, we met Tina, from Cambridge, who was cycling onto Fort William and was loving her first time visiting Scotland. She enjoyed hearing about the long walk!
Soon after we met Garry walking the other way and we said goodbye to Tina as she cycled towards Fort William.
We walked together to Laggan Lock, where we had a coffee and some tiffin from a small cafe outlet.
We've now arrived at our 'micro lodge' base for the next few nights where there is minimal signal so the blog may be a bit delayed/ have bits missing for a few days!
Garry walked 13 miles and me and Alfie walked 7 today. We managed to avoid the heavy rain which started 10 minutes after we got back to the car. Alfie is shattered!
Tomorrow, the plan is to walk from Laggan Lock to Fort Augustus.
