Day 64 Beinglas Farm to Tyndrum

 

The 250 year old cottage that we are staying is in Killin, opposite the Falls of Dochart, with a lovely view (and sound) to be heard from the cottage. 

 

                                                  

A sunny start to the day as we all set off on the WHW from Beinglas farm. We were full of midge repellant strategies, with insect repellant bands and skin-so-soft sprays as we walked up the inclined stony track from Beinglas farm for about a mile up through Glen Falloch.  Soon after, we started upon a  steady rocky incline heading towards Crianlarich. The path was rocky with bracken alongside it for the first part. We soon saw sections of the falls of Falloch as we continued climbing. 

               

After 2.5 miles, Alfie and I turned back to Beinglas Farm for some respite (before the planned rain) and Garry continued climbing for a while. 

  
The WHW soon joined the Old Military Road. Garry walked underneath the railway and the A82 along the track. 

Soon the Crianlarich crossroads appeared. There were a number of people on the track at this point. Garry went uphill and then downhill towards Ewich along Strath Fillan, and then under the railway again. It was then a 'life in your hands' moment as he dashed across the A85 where the WHW continued on the other side. The next mile of so was through flat fertile farmland,  Auchtertyre Farms and passing the remains of an old priory and old graveyard. There were many resting hikers through this section.



He recrossed the River Fillan and walked alongside the river and passed Lochan Dalrigh. It was then a straightforward walk through a forested area down into Tyndrum, which appeared quickly.

                                                   

We met a number of people on the route today who were interested in our endeavours. Laura and Gerhard, also two Australian women who recognised Garry from when he set off from Land's End, and Simone form Lithuania. 

Just over 12 miles walked for Garry with an elevation of nearly 1800 feet. He managed to avoid too much rain, the majority fell whilst I was in the cafe and car back at Beinglas farm.

Tomorrow sees a long haul of over 19 miles from Tyndrum up to Kingshouse, passing through The Bridge of Orchy.

                                                      Lands End to John o'Groats complete! Winding back to yesterday evening, Garry and I had a stroll around Wick harbour.        Much later in the evening, a surprise visitor, Will, arrived in Wick after 15 hours of train travel from London. The day after...

     We started from Land’s End on May 3 rd 2025, full of enthusiasm and apprehension and finished at John o'Groats on August 9 th 2025, weathered, weary but full of pride. Garry has walked   1112 miles through trails, bogs, lanes, fields and roads. I’ve walked   nearly 38% of the miles, a total of 421 miles, largely walking small sections each day whilst being the support vehicle for collecting and dropping Garry at the start and end of the routes.   We have walked through 25 different counties and districts/burghs (a different system in Scotland). We have stayed in 28 different places, mostly Airbnbs, but also a hotel, a ‘micro-lodge’, at a family member’s house and home. 40 nights have been in Scotland and   60 nights have been in England. Getting ready.....

We have a complete route planned now! We aim  to set off from Land's End on 3rd May 2025. We have decided to take on the challenge of walking from Land's End to John o'Groats, starting in early May 2025. It is likely to take 3 months and cover 1200 miles so definitely a big undertaking. Whilst walking, we are taking the opportunity to raise vital funds for Cancer Research UK. Many of us have either had cancer ourselves or have a family member who has been affected. Garry was diagnosed with prostate cancer in August 2023 and following a successful treatment is cancer free. Marie's brother Liam, sadly died in April 2024 following a diagnosis of oesophageal cancer. We have both had family members and friends who have not survived and others who have made successful recoveries with the amazing support of the NHS.
