It was raining as we all set off from Rowfoot car park this morning on the old railway line. Me and Alfie turned around after 2.5 miles and Garry continued and was soon in Haltwhistle, a small market town made famous by being in the middle of the UK.
Garry went over the old Alston Arches viaduct and through the town centre , he then followed the Haltwhistle Burn up to the old Military Road.We all met up at Burnhead, at Cawfield quarry, a disused quarry now filled with water.
We soon found Hadrian's Wall and walked alongside it for a number of miles. This was extremely arduous with lots of ascents and descents. We should have expected this but the weather was against us also. We had a number of soakings. We walked along with anticipation of seeing the Sycamore Gap. We were disappointed when we neared it as there was a group of people around the fenced stump. The group were waving religious flags and preaching loudly so we moved on.
Garry continued on Hadrian's Wall / Pennine Way past Crag Lough. Once off Hadrian's wall, Garry headed north over some very boggy moorland for 5 or 6 miles. He passed through a couple of forests to emerge in Ladyhill where his carriage awaited.
Garry walked 16. 2 miles with an ascent of over 2000 feet. I walked nearly 9 miles with an ascent of over 1100 feet, it felt much more up and down!
Tomorrow sees the Alston to Bellingham route finished and the start of the Bellingham to Byrness route.
Scotland is only a few days away!!
A couple of photos from yesterday, Rest Day. In Wooly's, the cafe by the Alston Old railway line, there was a meeting of red Mazdas. Our car looked rather out of place!
