A slightly later start today due to the longer walk yesterday. This meant Garry didn't hit the trail until 9.15am.
There was rolling hillside initially and then a sharp upwards stretch after Lothersdale. This was a pretty village. At the top of the climb, me, Vicki and Mark met Garry at Pinhaw, not far from a trig point and topograph.
After we'd met, we walked towards where we'd parked at Elslack Moor car park (with stunning views) and then we all continued along the Peninne Way.
We soon saw a number of walk/runners passing us who were in the The Spine Sprint. The Montane Summer Spine is a non-stop, 268 mile race along the most iconic national trail in Britain; the Pennine Way. Beginning from Edale in Derbyshire, runners have a time limit of 156 hours to reach the elusive village of Kirk Yetholm in the Scottish Borders. The runners/walkers had different end points.
After an hour or so, we came to a bridge over Brown house Beck.
A little later, we stopped just after Thornton-in-Craven at Old Cote for our picnic lunch, next to an water outlet.
The Pennine Way took us through a number of fields although the track was then easy to follow, as the Spine walkers had left a trail.
After a final climb, we arrived at the Liverpool Leeds canal. We walked along the towpath for about a mile and then cut off north-east through more farmland to Gargrave.
The East Marton Double Arched Bridge is a curious site on the Leeds to Liverpool Canal. The top arch was added to make the passage of motorised traffic over the canal easier.
We then left the towpath and walked across a number of fields and some lanes to arrive at Gargrave. Luckily, there was pub, where we rested our weary limbs and celebrated Garry's 11.8 miles and our 9 miles.
Tomorrow, it's back to just the two of us. We are walking from Gargrave to Malham tomorrow. I hope to have a visit to Malham Cove as sun is predicted!
Great to read yesterday's blog and see all the photos and videos. You had us thinking about Tom's friend Kate, then twigged it was Kate Bush and "Wuthering Heights"! You must be due for a proper rest day soon, surely Garry.?
