Day 21 Oldbury-on-Severn to Purton (a day of disused nuclear power stations)

 


Today me and Garry walked the 12.5 miles from Oldbury-on-Severn, joined by Sarah and then a little later by Phil (Veg) and his wife Sally further on again. We walked on the Severn Way with a mixture of wind, rain and sun.

Me, Garry and Sarah set off from Oldbury-on-Severn. Alfie had a rest day at home!


Coats were off, then on, then off again! The tide was going out in the Severn estuary and the landscape changed as we walked. We walked passed the disused Oldbury power station. It stopped producing electricity on 2012 and the site is now in decommissioning phase.  
                          


A navigation beacon

About 4.5 miles in, we met Phil walking towards us and we walked together towards Berkeley. We walked passed our second power station of the day, Berkeley power station, which closed in 1989 and is now well into its decommissioning phase.

Once we got to Berkeley, we met with Sally, Phil's wife.

We walked together on the Severn Way, mostly grass tracks, and some lanes including a railway line to walk over until we reached Purton. As we arrived at the car park, the bridge had opened to allow a large ship to pass through. 


A total of 12.5 miles walked for me and Garry today. My feet were shouting at me for the final 3 miles so I'm looking forward to a shorter one with some old work colleagues, starting from The Pilot Inn to Gloucester Docks. Garry will be walking from Purton to Gloucester Docks (over 14 miles).

Garry has walked a total of 270 miles and I have walked 104 since setting off from Lands End at the start of May.

 The weather doesn't look good so keep your fingers crossed for some dry spells!

    Loving seeing your walk so far! What a fantastic undertaking 🙌 I’ve been tipped off you are headed through West Yorkshire on your way north. Good choice! I look forward to getting out on the path with you then if I can 😁⛰️🥾

                                                      Lands End to John o'Groats complete! Winding back to yesterday evening, Garry and I had a stroll around Wick harbour.        Much later in the evening, a surprise visitor, Will, arrived in Wick after 15 hours of train travel from London. The day after...

     We started from Land’s End on May 3 rd 2025, full of enthusiasm and apprehension and finished at John o'Groats on August 9 th 2025, weathered, weary but full of pride. Garry has walked   1112 miles through trails, bogs, lanes, fields and roads. I’ve walked   nearly 38% of the miles, a total of 421 miles, largely walking small sections each day whilst being the support vehicle for collecting and dropping Garry at the start and end of the routes.   We have walked through 25 different counties and districts/burghs (a different system in Scotland). We have stayed in 28 different places, mostly Airbnbs, but also a hotel, a ‘micro-lodge’, at a family member’s house and home. 40 nights have been in Scotland and   60 nights have been in England. Getting ready.....

We have a complete route planned now! We aim  to set off from Land's End on 3rd May 2025. We have decided to take on the challenge of walking from Land's End to John o'Groats, starting in early May 2025. It is likely to take 3 months and cover 1200 miles so definitely a big undertaking. Whilst walking, we are taking the opportunity to raise vital funds for Cancer Research UK. Many of us have either had cancer ourselves or have a family member who has been affected. Garry was diagnosed with prostate cancer in August 2023 and following a successful treatment is cancer free. Marie's brother Liam, sadly died in April 2024 following a diagnosis of oesophageal cancer. We have both had family members and friends who have not survived and others who have made successful recoveries with the amazing support of the NHS.
