Day 78 Golspie to Brora (a day of seals, castles and beaches)

A shorter walk today. The three of us took the train south from Brora to Golspie, where the walk ended yesterday. We walked from the train station through the small town and crossed a lovely bridge (rather than walking through the ford) and went through some meadows next to the sea.                                                              About a mile onwards we passed the fairy-tale-like Dunrobin Castle, an impressive sight from the shoreline. From here, we went through a number of meadows and then walked along the beach as it was low tide.  There were plenty of groups of seals to watch.              Finally, we passed...

Day 77 Dornoch to Golspie

Another sunny day up in Sutherland, the last burgh before our final one of Caithness.  We all started at Dornoch, where Alfie had a quick run on the beach and we attempted some selfies! We walked through  Dornoch Golf Club, which was alongside the beach. At the end of the golf course, the path went onto the old railway line, which Garry followed, with views out to the North Sea.  Alfie and I went back to the beach for a cooling paddle, followed by the most delicious hot chocolate from Cocoa Mountain.        Garry passed the village of Embo where the path curved to the west and went along the edge of Loch Fleet. He saw the remains of Skelbo castle and there was lots of wildlife to be seen, including many common seals. This is the RSPB Nature Reserve alongside the tidal Loch Fleet.  At the end of this path, Garry joined a short path that ran parallel to the A9 before crossing over 'The Mound', a causeway/bridge over the end of Loch Fleet. Alf...

Day 76 Beyond Alness to Dornoch (1000 miles completed!)

It was cloudy but dry as I dropped Garry 4 miles outside Alness. He very quickly made it to 1000 miles total completed since Land's End!                        Garry continued along country lanes, fairly unremarkable into Tain, a small town. He had views to his right of the Cromarty Firth. Me and Alfie met Garry 2 miles out of Tain and we walked back together. The sun had come out by now and stayed out for the rest of the day.  Garry turned off and headed along the John o'Groats trail northwards out of the town, through a colourful subway.  Me and Alfie had a wander into Tain centre and found another heart to photograph. Garry crossed the A9 once again at Morangie, near to Glenmorangie distillery. He went up and over a hill through some woodland and then came down to a roundabout just before the A9 crosses the Dornoch Firth.  Crossing the narrow bridge for over a mile wasn't particularly pleasant. Once he ...
